The purpose of this course is to encourage students to explore social science studies related to media technology/content impacts and experience research under a guidance of a professor. Undergraduate students should aim for graduation thesis, research contests, media technology/content-related planning, start-up contests, etc. Graduate students can take this course to write an academic paper for a conference presentation or a journal publication. In this hands-on course, students will have the opportunity to interact closely with a mentor and will gain experience in conceptualizing research questions, designing research methods, and collecting and analyzing data.

This course reviews the theories mainly used in interpersonal communication research. The course is structured to expand your knowledge of important theories of interpersonal communication and familiarize you with interpersonal communication research based on those theories. As such, this course focuses on the connections between theory and research throughout the course. The course is organized so that a general overview of each theory will first be presented in lecture form, followed by student-led discussions of research articles related to each theory.

This is an advanced course for Introduction to Media Psychology course. Unlike mass media, source media users share and exchange content that they produce. In this course, students will learn about psycholgoical mechanisms for social media users’ responses to content in social media. Students will learn relevant psychological theories such as Festiger’s social comparison theory and Lockwood and Kunda’s theory of inspiration. Students will write a research paper about an interesting phenamenon in SNS based on their observation and relevant theories.

Social phenomena and events which we encounter everyday are closely related with social science concepts and theories from public administration, public policy and other disciplines. Theories, frameworks, models and concepts from public administration and other social science disciplines provide lens and perspectives in understanding, explaining social problems and developing solutions for them. The students should embody and apply new perspectives and insight in understanding and in suggesting solutions for public problems occurring in the contemporary. For this goal, this class focuses on providing cases of social problems, government's policymaking, public services, and analyzing the causes and processes of, and designing solutions for the cases. We will ponder over 1) what are public problems or issues 2) why these problems should be dealt by governments or public governance, not by market or private sector 3) what policies or tools should be applied in solving problems . Drawing on case analyses of applying theories and concepts on public issues, this class aims to help students to understand the social phenomena in depth, and to develop public policies for addressing them.
