Department of Media and Communication

On March 1, 2019, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication was officially renamed the Department of Media and Communication, expanding its academic vision in response to the evolving demands of the era.

 

The Department of Media and Communication at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) conducts comprehensive research on communication phenomena across society. It explores the influence of mass media, interpersonal and organizational communication, and interactions between media technologies and humans. With a balanced focus on theoretical foundations and practical application, the department emphasizes the following areas:

• Communication in the Digital Age: Strengthening integrated and innovative fields such as social media, smart media, telecommunications, and gaming.

• Human-AI Interaction: Integrating understanding and practice of AI-based communication technologies and human interaction.

• Interpersonal and Organizational Communication: Exploring human relationships and interactions within and across organizations.

• Mass Communication: Studying mass media phenomena including newspapers, broadcasting, film, publishing, advertising, public relations, and the internet.

The department aims to build a systematic and comprehensive knowledge base while fostering communication professionals with global competence. Through this, it seeks to cultivate practical and forward-thinking communication experts who contribute to society and humanity.

Key areas of study include media technology, human-AI interaction, communication theories, political communication, cultural studies, new media content, advertising, PR, and journalism.

 

Through this curriculum, are encouraged to understand technological advancements and become leading media professionals. The department also emphasizes hands-on training, including broadcast and video production, news reporting, media practice, speech, and announcing, ensuring students acquire practical skills for the industry.
