To promote collaboration among member institutions of the International Journalism and Communication Education Consortium, enhance international youth’s understanding of China’s modernization, and cultivate communication talents with a global perspective and digital literacy, the School of Journalism and Communication at Shanghai University, supported by the Chinese Government Scholarship, will host the 2026 International Journalism and Communication Education Consortium Shanghai Summer School for Intelligent Communication.

1. Main Content of the Summer School:

(1) Courses: Renowned Chinese and international scholars will deliver lectures on key topics such as intelligent communication, mega-city governance in Shanghai, Shanghai’s modernization as a lens for understanding China’s global integration, innovative communication practices on digital platforms (e.g., social media, short videos, virtual exhibitions, metaverse), and the application and challenges of intelligent communication technologies in cross-cultural contexts.

• Thematic Salons and Workshops: Participants will engage in academic salons and roundtable discussions in diverse groups to foster in-depth dialogue and multicultural exchange.
• Thematic Visits: Participants will visit smart city demonstration sites, leading media organizations, and digital media enterprises to gain insights into digital governance and communication innovation.

Intelligent Communication Content Creation: Participants will be guided to produce innovative cross-cultural communication content, such as short videos and data visualizations, centered on the theme “Shanghai and the Story of China’s Modernization.” This component emphasizes creativity, storytelling, and the practical application of digital communication tools.

4. Benefits:

The summer school provides participants with the following:

Tuition fees for the two-week summer school courses and activities are waived

Medical insurance in China (RMB 400 per person)

On-campus accommodation at Shanghai University for two weeks (shared rooms: either four participants per room or two participants per room)

Living allowance for the two-week period:

-RMB 1,500 for undergraduate and master’s students

-RMB 1,750 for doctoral students and faculty members

Please note that international airfare and other personal expenses are not covered and must be borne by the participants.

5. Eligibility: 

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Academic Status: Current undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral students, or active faculty members, with an academic background in journalism and communication or related fields.
• Nationality: Applicants must be foreign nationals (non-PRC passport holders). Individuals from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are eligible only if they hold a foreign passport.
• Institutional Affiliation: Applicants must be affiliated with an institution that is a member of the International Journalism and Communication Education Consortium.

1. If applications exceed the maximum enrollment of 20 participants, quotas will be allocated among Consortium member institutions.
