Research in the communications discipline relies heavily upon survey and interview methodologies to gather data on human attitudes and behaviors. These and other self-report measures can provide some insights into human thought and behaviors, but they are also subject to error introduced via social desirability and other forms of bias. To address this, biometrics technologies, including eye-tracking, facial recognition, and galvanic skin response (GSR) have increasingly found utility to supplement self-report measures in studies focusing on visual behavior, emotional response, and recall.
The current presentation provides an overview of the technical foundations of each of these biometrics approaches, the data that they produce, and the variables that can be observed. This culminates in a discussion of reporting best practices for individuals seeking to use biometrics technologies in future research.
